Maps serve as an important tool for many disciplines, from geology to archaeology...from a boat captain to an architect. Explorers, historians, and many kinds of scientists use maps for very specific purposes, whether they are mapping the moon, the routes of trading or creating a trail for the first time. Medical doctors use different types of maps for locating and identifying parts of the body. Maps can represent anything that has a spatial component, and therefore numerous map types are possible. Fortunatly maps can be categorized based on their function. These functional categories are General-purpose maps, Special-purpose maps and Thematic maps. |
