Day 5
Reefs and Beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Beach sediments of the volcanic mountain / island complex of the Big Island of Hawaii are highly variable. In general, they reflect the island’s volcanic origin and composition, geologic youthfulness and interaction with its surrounding carbonate-produc-ing marine environment. The morning lecture will provide an overview of the processes of sediment production on a volcanic island. A following session of shallow, nearshore snorkeling will introduce you to the coral reef environment of Hawaii. An afternoon hike along the shoreline of the Kona Coast State Park, just north of Kailua, will allow you the opportunity to examine and discuss beaches that range in composi-tion from black, glassy volcanic sand to white, coral-rich carbonate sand.
Makalawena Beach, north of Kona, is home to the largest white sand dunes on the island.
