A brief morning orientation lecture reviews the geologic history of the Big Island with emphasis on Kilauea, perhaps the world most famous active volcano. The rest of the long field trip day is spent in the Kilauea portion of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The surface of Kilauea Volcano along the southeastern portion of the Big Island displays a myriad of features characteristic of the huge, effusive, low viscosity basaltic Hawaiian volcanoes that comprise the planets longest chain of volcanic mountains. Extensive lava flows, periodic explosive tephra deposits, fissures, calderas, pit craters, lava tubes, fault scarps and many other related features will be examined along Crater Rim Drive, Chain of Craters Road and various trails. Depending on the volcanoes level of activity, we may have an opportunity to hike to an active lava tube and lava delta. If lava is flowing directly into the ocean you will view its glow and explosive behavior in early evening darkness before leaving the park. Such an experience will be one you will not soon forget. |
