|
Arrival Sunday: Hilo Airport |
Airport pickup and transport to Accommodations for check in and early evening reception. |
|
Day 1 Monday: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park |
Examination of Kilauea Crater area followed by stops along Chain of Craters road and evening hike to view active lava tube and lava delta where flow enters ocean. |
|
Day 2 Tuesday: Lectures at UH Hilo & Road Trip |
Character and origin of the volcanoes of the Big Island. Volcano monitoring and hazard evaluation. Soil formation in Hawaii. Hamakua Coast (NE Hawaii Island) to view Akaka Falls, Lapahoehoe Valley, Waipio Valley and the oldest portion of the island. |

Day 3 Wednesday: Field Trip to Mauna Kea Volcanics Glacial Deposits Astronomy Observatory |
Mauna Kea summit field trip to observe late-stage cinder cones, and Pleistocene glacially-modified sediments. Joint geology and astronomy program observatory visit. |
|
Day 4 Thursday: SOUTH POINT Pakala Volcanic Ash and Green Sand Beach |
Examination of South Point fault scarp and hike to Mahana Bay to examine Pakala Ash deposits and one of Hawaii's famous littoral (coastal) cinder cones and associated green sand beach. |
|
Day 5 Friday: Reefs and Beaches of Kona Coast |
Presentation on the character and origin of Hawaiis amazing coral/algal reefs and beautiful beaches followed by snorkeling on a shallow, nearshore reef and shoreline hike to examine black and white sandy beaches and sand dunes. |
