Kauai Airport pickup and transport to Waimea Plantation Cottages for check in and early evening reception. |

Sunday Overview of Hawaii's Geologic History and Kauai's Waimea Canyon |
Morning lecture followed by picnic lunch at Kokee State Park near the top of the island and afternoon hike in the spectacular 2500 ft deep "Grand Canyon of the Pacific". Lesson plans include scale modeling of the Earth and construction and destruction of an ocean volcanic mountain/island chain. |

Monday Island Biogeography |
Presentation on aspects of fauna and flora migration and speciation followed by a hike through the gorgeous vegetation of the island's mountain top bogs. Lesson plans deal with delineation of an ecosystem and the basic elements of an investigative excursion. |

Tuesday Free Day |
A day for relaxation and island exploration. |

Wednesday Sandy Beaches and Sand Dunes |
Lecture on the formation of sediments on a mid-oceanic volcanic island and field trips to examine the island's dynamic coastal zone where both volcanic black sand and beautiful white sand are forming Kauai's spectacular world famous beaches. Lesson plans include beach/sand dune profiles, characterization of sedimentary deposits based on internal stratification and textures and sediment compositional analyses. |

Thursday Reefs |
Presentation on the character and origin of Hawaii's amazing coral/algal reefs and field trips to several of Kauai's prominent fringing reef systems. Lesson plans on identification and systematic measurement of ecosystem elements such as coral, algae and fish, and approaches to evaluation of ecosystem vitality. |

Friday Free Day and Evening Luau |
More time for independent island exploration and an evening of Hawaiian culture. |

Saturday Hawaii's Changing Sea Levels |
Lecture on the history of sea level change in the Pacific followed by field trip to Kauai's sacred lithified sand dunes, east of Poipu. Lesson plans dealing with models of Earth's atmospheric cycles of heating and cooling, ways to evaluate man's influence onglobal climatic warming, and documentation of sea level change. |
