The Science of Ecosystems program engages you for a full seven-day week. We start most days with a brief orientation talk and then continue with an interactive field trip to a specific, carefully selected locality. In addition each day will include discussion and practice of several lesson plan activities. Two days are FREE DAYS an d have no scheduled educational activities so that participants can relax and explore on their own. (Day 3 and Day 6). A courtesy luau is provided for the evening of Day 6.

1) The origin of Hawaii’s chain of hugeshield volcanic mountain/islands, based on geological theory of plate tectonics.

2) Destruction of the islands by mass wasting, subsidence, weathering, and erosion.

3) Various aspects of biogeography, such as long-distance migrationof plants and animals and island speciation.

4) Human interaction with the natural environment, including the impactof agriculture and soil erosion, harvesting of ocean resources, and urbanization with pollution and destruction of entire ecosystems.

5) Global climatic change (natural and human influenced) and resulting sea level changes.

6)
The impact of natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes.

7)
Approaches to the conservation and preservation of ecosystems as well as more effective methods of human coexistence with the natural environment through better management of natural resources in order to establish a balance of utilization and replenishment.

GENERAL INFORMATION AND CONDITIONS
 
SEMINAR FEE
The fee for the week-long training seminar is $1150 per person. Accommodations for the week (8 nights) have been arranged at a cost of $550, based on double occupancy. A single room (one person) can be arranged at an additional charge of $475. A double room shared with a spouse/companion who does not participate in the seminar can be arranged for and additional $475. Graduate Credit (3 units) for the seminar is available optionally through California State University at Northridge at a cost of $330 (i.e., $110/unit).
ACCOMODATIONS
Accommodations are located in Sunny Poipu (South Shore) and/or along the Coconut Coast (East Shore) depending on availability and enrollment numbers. Both are located in close proximity to beaches, shopping and restaurants.
INCLUDES
Seminar fee includes accommodations, lectures and field trips, guidebook, transportation from and to the airport, field trip transport, welcoming reception, lunches and refreshments on field trip days and the luau on the evening of Day 6.

INCLUDED
Not included in the seminar fee are items such as air transport to and from Kauai, morning and evening meals on field trip days and all meals on free days. Also not included are local and long distance telephone charges incurred at the Waimea Plantation Cottages. Coin-operated laundry facilities are available locally at the cottages or in Waimea town.

Rental cars can be obtained on Kauai at the Lihue airport. This is an optional expense; however, we will assist you in arranging for a car.
RESERVATIONS
Seminar group size is limited to 15 participants to maximize your learning experience, so early reservations are recommended. A $250 deposit and submittal of the application form reserves a place for you. Unless the seminar is fully subscribed $50 of your deposit is nonrefundable. The remainder is refundable only up to 60 days prior to the seminar date you have requested. A written request for such a refund must be received in writing by mail, fax or e-mail by before that time. Payment in full of the seminar fee and accommodation cost is required 30 days prior to your seminar date; failure to do so may result in your reservation being given to someone else. Reservations are filled on a space available, first come basis as application forms and deposits are received. A waiting list is established for over-subscribed tours.
