Kauai's Geologic History: A Simplified Guide (1998) by Chuck Blay and Robert Siemers is a colorful 43 page booklet (5.5 x8 inch) that presents a low-tech overview of the various aspects of the geology of Hawaii and the island of Kauai. Included are 27 full color diagrams and a 5-page glossary with simplified definitions of 44 key geotechnical terms. Most illustrations are colorized and otherwise modified technical diagrams derived from the geological literature. Figure captions have been simplified and expanded to enhance their impact. By design the booklet contains only a small amount (6 pages) of introduc-tory and concluding text. The book is organized loosely into four related portions. Follow-ing a four page introduction that lists 10 key geological points illustrated in the book, the first portion (illustrations on pages 5-16) provides an overview of the character and origin of the greater Hawaiian volcanic mountain/island system, which has been produced over the past 75-80 million years as the Pacific Tectonic Plate moved over the Hawaiian Magmatic Hot Spot. A second portion (illustrations on pages 17-28) deals specifically with Kauai's geologic history. That is followed (pages 29-33) by key illustrations, never before presented in a simplified book form, that summarize new data on the geology of the submarine portions of the Hawaiian volcanic mountain/ islands. A final illustration, the Kauai/Earth Time Line (page 39), and the Concluding Remarks present various aspects of Kauai, and the Hawaiian Islands in general, within a framework of the 10 orders of magnitude of geologic time. |
