Day-Trips to West Side Beaches or to the Island’s Eastern and Northern Beaches

The beaches of Kauai
are among the best in the world. Depending on how one divides them up for naming, there are 80-90 beaches which collectively occupy 45-50% of the island’s 111 mile perimeter. Kauai displays Hawaii’s longest continuous sandy shoreline along the 16+ miles of the Mana Coastal Plain from Waimea River to Polihale. Polihale Beach also is the state’s largest beach in terms of sand volume. Beaches along the east and north side of the island commonly occupy the insides of large bays (e.g., Hanamaulu, Anahola, Moloaa, Hanalei) or the shoreline behind extensive coral/algal fringing reefs (e.g., Kapa’a, Larsen’s to Pila’a, Anini, Haena, Ke’e). Except for Waimea Beach, which is the island’s one major black (volcanic) sand beach, most of Kauai’s beaches are white sand beaches composed mainly of fragments of a stony algae and coral which are derived from the reef growth all around the island.

Each beach represents a story.
Some are particularly unique owing to their character and origin, others are highlighted by the Hawaiian myths they have evoked, and all have been the site of a variety of human activities over the past 2000 years. Some beaches are listed among the most dangerous for swimming, while other are particularly safe even for small children. On this tour you will have an opportunity to learn about the character and origin of each beach visited and you will be entertained by the stories that surround each locality. Two day-long tours are available, one to the west side beaches and the other to the eastern and northern beaches.

Observe white sand beaches, coastal plants,
sea birds, and other sea life such as
turtles, dolphins and whales.
